I’m looking for the face I had, before the world was made

Stanislaw Barszczak, When you are old – a letter for a friend.

Ignatio was 20 years old at the time, I met him in Buenos Aires. Christian from Paris was 24-25, so we have nothing to lose. We have no families, no children, no houses. Christian had an old car. I had a Volkswagen van, I mean, all we were going to lose is our cars and the shirts off our back. To exist is to change, to change is to mature, to mature is to go on creating oneself endlessly. I have convinced myself of this for many years and finally the moment came as the last happiness of my walking on earth. The eye sees only what the mind is prepared to comprehend. Think like a man of action, act like a man of thought, I personally decided about it. The only cure for vanity is laughter, and the only fault that is laughable is vanity. The present contains nothing more than the past, and what is found in the effect was already in the cause. Religion is to mysticism what popularization is to science, somebody said. Spirit borrows from matter the perceptions on which it feeds and restores them to matter in the form of movements which it has stamped with its own freedom. There is no greater joy than that of feeling oneself a creator. The triumph of life is expressed by creation. Laughter is the corrective force which prevents us from becoming cranks. Intelligence is the faculty of making artificial objects, especially tools to make tools. So, do not complain beneath the stars about the lack of bright spots in your life. But life does not consist of words. Life consists of reality. Ignatio had spoken: “Rule number one: Never make a fool of yourself. Christian said: Rule number two: Never be a burden to any one.” Ignatio like a happy boy added: Rule number three: Always be in the fashion. I want to go away, oh so far, far away. I will tell you why I have been so happy before: it was because I did not really love any one; from the day we love someone, we cease to be happy… It was a beautiful December day when we could meet to chat. Without imagination we should be lost; for only with its help can we interpret our experience, turn it into experience of an outer world, and thus make use of it in understanding what and where we are, and what we need to do, Christian said. To lead a human life, a man must have a notion of himself as having a past and a future. Without imagination, we merely see or hear, and even if we see or hear that the objects of the senses are beautiful, we cannot feel that they are so. The difference is this: in feeling the beauty of objects, we enjoy not only the common, shared pleasures of the senses, but also the private pleasures of the imagination, peculiar to ourselves, and such that we have to struggle to articulate them. Let’s go invent tomorrow rather than worrying about what happened yesterday. So, I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out ok. I do not adopt softness towards others because I want to make them better. You can build your own things that other people can use. And once you learn that, you’ll never be the same again, I knew that since. Once you discover one simple fact, and that is everything around you that you call life, was made up by people that were no smarter than you. I always advise people – Don’t wait! Do something when you are young, when you have nothing to lose, and keep that in mind. As I mentioned, that’s why we started to gather people of all environments, we said you know, we have absolutely nothing to lose. We he had everything to gain. And we figured even if we crash and burn, and lose everything, the experience will have been worth ten times the cost. I don’t care about being right now. I care about success and doing the right thing. That’s been one of my mantras – focus and simplicity. The most precious thing that we all have with us is time. We are very careful about what features we add because we can’t take them away. On any blue box, let we say: That was what we learned: was that us, too, we didn’t know much. We could build a little thing that could control a giant thing and that was an incredible lesson. Believing that the dots will connect down the road will give you the confidence to follow your heart. So, I understand this, don’t take it all too seriously. If you want to live your life in a creative way, as an artist, you have to not look back too much. You have to be willing to take whatever you’ve done and whoever you were and throw them away. One way to remember who you are is to remember who your heroes are. People who know what they’re talking about don’t need power. We were really working fourteen-to-eighteen-hour days, seven days a week. For like, two years, three years. That was our life. But we loved it, we were young, and we could do it. You have to trust in something, your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. People judge you on your performance, so focus on the outcome. Be a yardstick of quality. Some people aren’t used to an environment where excellence is expected. Now, beloved young readers, as you graduate to begin anew, I wish that for you, ‘Stay hungry, stay foolish’. It’s more fun to be a pirate than to join the Navy. Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma, which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary… You see other people now. Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules, and they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify and vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as crazy, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do. Being the richest man in the cemetery doesn’t matter to me… Going to bed at night saying we’ve done something wonderful… that’s what matters to me. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice…The world is full of magic things, patiently waiting for our senses to grow sharper, one of us has said such or similar thoughts. So, I have spread my dreams under your feet. Tread softly because you tread on my dreams. For he would be thinking of love till the stars had run away and the shadows eaten the moon. Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire. When you are old and grey and full of sleep, and nodding by the fire, take down this book, and slowly read, and dream of the soft look. Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep. How many loved your moments of glad grace, and loved your beauty with love false or true. But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you, and loved the sorrows of your changing face. And bending down beside the glowing bars, murmur, a little sadly, how love fled and paced upon the mountains overhead. and hid his face amid a crowd of stars. Come away, O human child! To the waters and the wild, with a faery, hand in hand. For the world’s more full of weeping than you can understand. Had I the heavens’ embroidered cloths, enwrought with golden and silver light, the blue and the dim and the dark cloths of night and light and the half light, I would spread the cloths under your feet: But I, being poor, have only my dreams; I have spread my dreams under your feet; tread softly because you tread on my dreams. Faeries, come take me out of this dull world, for I would ride with you upon the wind, run on the top of the dishevelled tide, and dance upon the mountains like a flame, William Butler Yeats said. A mermaid found a swimming lad, picked him up for her own, pressed her body to his body, laughed; and plunging down forgot in cruel happiness that even lovers drown. So, life is a long preparation for something that never happens. Never give all the heart, for love will hardly seem worth thinking of to passionate women if it seem certain, and they never dream that it fades out from kiss to kiss; For everything that’s lovely is but a brief, dreamy, kind delight. O Never give the heart outright, For they, for all smooth lips can say, Have given their hearts up to the play. And who could play it well enough. If deaf and dumb and blind with love? He that made this knows all the cost, For he gave all his heart and lost. But I, being poor, have only my dreams; I have spread my dreams under your feet; Tread softly because you tread on my dreams…Ignatio being Polish, he had an abiding sense of tragedy, which sustained him through temporary periods of joy. There is another world, but it is in this one. Vodka comes in at the mouth and love comes in at the eye; That’s all we shall know for truth before we grow old and die. I lift the glass to my mouth, I look at you, and sigh… At the sailing harbor, Izabela suddenly wailed. Hat crazed girl improvising her music. Her poetry, dancing upon the shore, Her soul in division from itself, Climbing, falling She knew not where, Hiding amid the cargo of a steamship, Her knee-cap broken, that girl I declare A beautiful lofty thing, or a thing Heroically lost, heroically found. No matter what disaster occurred She stood in desperate music wound, Wound, wound, and she made in her triumph Where the bales and the baskets lay No common intelligible sound But sang, ‘O sea-starved, hungry sea… I thought about it, then my friend’s words once again woke me up: Let us go forth, the tellers of tales, and seize whatever prey the heart long for, and have no fear. Everything exists, everything is true, and the earth is only a little dust under our feet. How many loved your moments of glad grace, and loved your beauty with love false or true; But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you, and loved the sorrows of your changing face. Beloved Reader…I’m looking for the face I had, before the world was made…Do not wait to strike till the iron is hot; but make it hot by striking. Think like a wise man but communicate in the language of the people. There are no strangers, only friends you have not met yet. I bring you with reverent hands, the books of my numberless dreams. I will arise and go now, And go to Innisfree, and a small cabin build there, of clay and wattles made; nine bean rows will I have there, a hive for the honey bee, and live alone in the bee-loud glade. And I shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping slow, dropping from the veils of the morning to where the cricket sings; there midnight’s all a glimmer, and noon a purple glow, and evening full of the linnet’s wings. I will arise and go now, for always night and day I hear lake water lapping with low sounds by the shore; while I stand on the roadway or on the pavements gray, I hear it in the deep heart’s core. The worst thing about some men is that when they are not drunk they are sober. All empty souls tend toward extreme opinions. The secret of joy in work is contained in one word – excellence. To know how to do something well is to enjoy it. If you want to understand today, you have to search yesterday. I don’t wait for moods. You accomplish nothing if you do that. Your mind must know it has got to get down to work. You cannot make yourself feel something you do not feel, but you can make yourself do right in spite of your feelings. To serve is beautiful, but only if it is done with joy and a whole heart and a free mind. The truth is always exciting. Speak it, then. Life is dull without it. Some are kissing mothers and some are scolding mothers, but it is love just the same, and most mothers kiss and scold together. The young do not know enough to be prudent, and therefore they attempt the impossible – and achieve it, generation after generation. Every great mistake has a halfway moment, a split second when it can be recalled and perhaps remedied. To find joy in work is to discover the fountain of youth. Many people lose the small joys in the hope for the big happiness. You cannot make yourself feel something you do not feel, but you can make yourself do right in spite of your feelings. To eat bread without hope is still slowly to starve to death. Truth is always exciting. Speak it, then. Life.
