Stanislaw Barszczak, I found Jesus …
(The life of Pope John Paul II in paintings)
Karol Wojtyla came to the world on May 18, 1920. He was baptized in the parish church on June 20, 1920 by Fr. Franciszek Żak, a military chaplain. His early life was marked by death. When he was 9 years old, his mother died (April 13, 1929). Mrs. Emilia used to be a seamstress. Three years later, on December 5, 1932, at the age of 26, his brother Edmund died at the age of 26, on Scarlet fever. Since September 1930, Karol Wojtyla began his studies at the 8-year-old State Junior Marcin Wadowita Gymnasium in Wadowice after passing his entrance exams. According to his catechists, he had a great faith. On May 14, 1938, Karol Wojtyla completed his secondary school education, receiving a high school diploma with an admission mark which enabled him to pursue studies at most universities without entrance exams. Karol Wojtyla chose Polish studies at the Faculty of Philosophy at the Jagiellonian University. The study began in October 1938. This year after the death of his wife and son Edmund, Karol senior moved from Wadowice with his growing son Karol to Cracow. Unique walks over Skawa with a growing son he now turned to the Vistula neighborhood. On February 18, 1941 by a profession a tailor and captain of the Austro-Hungarian Army, after a long illness he died. In 1942 and 1943, Karol, as a representative of the Cracow academic community, went to Czestochowa to renew the vows on Jasna Gora Monastery. In Cracow he fell in love with the theater. Charles’s separation from the theater occurred suddenly in 1942 when he decided to study theology and entered the secret Metropolitan Seminary in Cracow. On November 1, 1946, Cardinal Adam Stefan Sapieha ordained Karol Wojtyla as a priest in the Chapel
of the Archbishops of Cracow. On November 2, as a neo-priest he celebrated Mass in the crypt of St. Leonard in the Wawel Cathedral. In 1948 he graduated with a diploma summa cum laude and received a doctorate degree for dissertation titled “The problem of faith in St. John of the Cross.” In July 1948 Karol Wojtyla was sent to work in the parish of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Niegowic, where he served as vicar and catechist. Leisure time spent with young people in nature. In August 1949 he was transferred to the parish of St. Florian in Cracow. There he prayed on Gregorian chant. He still went on trips with young people. In order to confuse then the police he took off his cassock and allowed him to be called “uncle”.
He was one of the most influential leaders of the 20th century. His election to the Holy See had a particular impact on the events of Eastern Europe and Asia in the 1980s and 1990s. He contributed to improving the Catholic Church’s relationship with Judaism, Islam, the Orthodox Church and the Anglican Communion. During his pontificate he visited 129 countries and elevated more people to the altars than all his predecessors in the previous five centuries. He died on April 2, 2005. Delegations from more than 150 countries participated in the funeral, and a six-day national mourning was announced in Poland. One month after the funeral, the beatification process of John Paul II began (1 May 2011). On April 27, 2014, there was a joint canonization of John XXIII and John Paul II. This event has passed into the history of the Church because of the proclamation of the saints of two popes in the presence of two Roman bishops, first in office and this one retired.

It’s early April 1929. On the wall on the floor of the house, the painting, titled “Mother recognizes Jesus among law scholars,” the sun already laid gold glows gently, thus declaring the end of his daily hike. The church was allowed to hear the bell calling for the service. On the couch Karol is sitting. Mrs. Emilia tells the story of Charles the Great from Aachen. This city is located in Germany. She talked about the Celts who stood there at the beginning of this city. The city built as a spa resort with warm sulfur springs (up to 74 ° C) under the name of Aquae Grani or Aquisgranum (from Granus, Celtic healing cave). Pepin Little appreciated the healing properties of the Granus in Aachen, where he built a chapel and a residence (palatium) at the site of the Roman temple. It is from here that the first mention of Akwizgran in 765. Son and successor of Pepin, Charles the Great, the ruler of the Carolingian empire, chose Aachen for his seat. In the year 790 in Aachen a palace of Carolins was built, based on classic patterns, with a famous octagonal chapel was preserved (the mother shows Karol a picture of the Chapel of the Cathedral in Aachen). The chapel was built by master Odo of Metz. He has accumulated many valuable Christian relics. In 962 Otton I crowned himself in the Aachen Cathedral, and since then until 3131 there were 31 German kings crowned there. In 1165, Charles the Great was canonized, and a year later the city was granted city rights and became a free city of the Reich. In the 12th-13th century it was fortified, developed successfully thanks to trade (Aachen fairs from 1166). In the late Middle Ages there was the development of weaving and dressing, and the city played an important role in German politics – here the meetings of the Reichstag and synods took place. In the 16th century, as a result of religious wars, the city began to decline – the crowning of kings was transferred to Frankfurt am Main. To further deepen the crisis contributed to the fire of May 2, 1656.Then the whole city burned down. In the 17th and 19th centuries it was a popular spa among European elite (alkaline-sulphate waters) and “entertainment” city with casinos, ballrooms and other places of enjoyment. Aachen was a place of peace between Spain and France in the war of Flanders in 1668, and on 1748 year a peace was there in the Austrian succession war. In 1801 the room in Lunéville was granted to the city of France, and the Vienna Congress delivered it in 1815 Prussia. In 1818 the first congress of the Holy Alliance was held here. Thanks to the proximity of the coal mines, the textile, iron, optical and chemical industries (fertilizers) have grown in the 19th and early 20th centuries. At that time, the city became an important railway junction, linking the German lines with Belgian, in 1870 established a polytechnic. In the post-World War I period, the city was the seat of the Landgericht, the Reichsbahn Railway Management Branch; city owned a school of art industry. Mrs. Emilia once again shows the Cathedral in Aachen, where Carol the Great and Otton III are buried. The market square (Marktplatz) is located 14th-century town hall, built on the ruins of the palace of Charlemagne.

Noche oscura
It’s 1942. Karol decides he will be a priest. His tendency to Polish literature was transformed into love for Christ the High Priest. The Nazi night he is lying in bed yet. He survived the street accident. He loves seeing a pest in his bed. In his dreams he saw his father, who appeared to be a giant. In particular, it was the occupation of his country by the Vistula during the all day. Then under the aegis of literature he is reborn. Literate verses lightly entered his mind at that time. But lately on the street of Cracow he met a priest who directed his thoughts to God … Because the head was not punished, as a result, he decided that his university knowledge would be useful in the Christ Priesthood. Is the decision of free will most important? Then he also asks himself how much man would be sicked? His illness was not to die. Since there is no limit as a transition between the conscious and the unconscious in man, it has opened to him the door to humanism and the transcendence of God. Acting, even sexual tension, did not separate him from the general inhibitions of the individual. For higher purposes one must leave the earthly homeland. Finally, religious motifs, rational motives his life gained. I was born in Poland with a tradition of strong rights, now occupied by Hitler’s army. Justice demands good order in the social sphere. There is no good order in my homeland. Strong justice has awakened in Poland in the past. Now she is gone. The ideal society, however, is a weak society. So, if that is the case, then I choose the weak Justice, which is realized in the Catholic Church. This latter is to be my church of righteous rights. And if I represent the weak state of the church, then it can save me in life only success … At the time, in Poland dark occupation night raged, there was no homeland on the map, she might not have been then represented as the strongest state of the Law.

Belgian Seminary in Rome
In 1946, the centenary the Belgian College in Rome, Via del Qurinale 26 was inhabited by Fr. Karol Wojtyla. At present the College is relocated to another place. Father Charles then met priests from all over the world and formed the first deeper contacts. From there he traveled to Marseille in 1947. At that time, he made a voyage to the Virgin Mary of Marseille. He climbed up to the Basilica of Notre Dame de la Garde. While walking around the city, however, he was particularly impressed by the so-called “Old Charity,” a building that reminded him of the great charity work of Brother Albert in Cracow.
It took place in 1670, the charity of Marseille entrusted to Pierre Puget, the royal architect, to build a hospital to accommodate beggars and the poor there. Construction of the ‘Vieille Charite’, a great achievement of the architectural era, was completed in 1749. The complex consists of four buildings, the wings are enclosed outside and have an open gallery on three levels on the inside of a rectangular courtyard. These are large rooms, generally accessible for work and life, separately for men and women. In the middle of the courtyard stood a chapel built in 1679 and 1707, which is a remarkable architectural work, with an oval dome, a perfect example of pure Italian baroque. The present facade, dating back to 1863, returns to the topic of love. After the revolution until the end of the 19th century, the building became a charity hospice, reserved for the elderly and children. In 1905 the building was occupied by the army. Abandoned after World War II, destined for demolition … It’s 1947 spring, Karol student the building in the ruins saw… (But the building was finally classified as a monument, and in 1951 under the direction of modern architects, eg Le Corbusier, has regained its former glory. In 1986 it housed a museum, now an interdisciplinary center for scientific and cultural purposes, the author of the story)
A year later, in Rome, he received a Ph.D. “The problem of faith in Sts. John of the Cross. ” The depth of faith, the breadth of horizons, and the courage of the Spanish saint’s efforts greatly stirred the imagination and intellect of the future pope who decided to systematize his thoughts in his dissertation. He later wrote about it in the apostolic letter on the occasion of the 400th anniversary of the death of Sts. John of the Cross (1990): At a time when “Europe was rising from the ashes after the dark night of war (this is an allusion to the term noche oscura – dark night, one of the most important terms used by John from the Cross to describe the development of the way of faith ), I wrote in Rome a doctoral dissertation on theology on: Faith at St. John of the Cross. I analyzed in it and highlighted the central statement of the Mystical Doctor: faith is the only, closest and proportionate means for union with God. “Writing about God as an entity was something new. The relationship between man and God is not objectified because it is personal. God is a person and therefore enters into a relationship with a human being who responds to His initiative. This divine initiative exploits and illuminates the natural structures of man, which, through this, he can experience. Man does not understand God, but accepts and accepts him. Man’s encounter with God does not result in absolute knowledge, because God is absolutely inexpressible, the encounter is always covered with the darkness of faith. The night of reason is a kind of mystical light that allows us to discover that God is truly present in the soul of man … Because God is ever more invisible in history … You must discover the mysteries of the beginning of God, surely in this direction would now gone papal retreats.
We do acts (in german das Böse) with empathy, but also with suffering (German, Mittleid), in everyday life and in the State. Animals do not have Böse. The other thing is evil like in german Schlechte, in english bad – as a consequence of evil deeds. Evil in man is enormous. Sexual release, my ritual burden, only signal of the problem … Caritas realizes capitalist soul. Mostly family and benefits matter. In socialism, I am interested in others … In today’s financial destabilization we have no criterion: what is wrong now will not be bad for 5 years (no criterion). Psychopath is bad not in the sense of Böse. The psychopath is not Böse, but he is ill. We notice here the goodness of evil (des Böse) in the lives of individuals and societies.
We have no small mistakes (in german Irrtum). Because every other person, so other suffering (German Mittleid). Hence, the Right of Rights (der Rechte),Competition of Enterprises, Networks. Let’s note the contemporary shift of accents (German: Verschiebung), the narrowing of laws or their extension. Evil in man (das Böse im Menschen) – more or less conscious. And what is the disease (in german Krankheit) – when there is no suffering now (German). From this perspective let’s look at the favor of the neighbors. In this context, Kant spoke of Erhaben as the sublimity. And Alisdair MacIntyre about ends and endings. So we have a storm of evil, eyes of evil. On the issue of the state-dependence on the state. Already in the past conditions were created for Minimal dependence on the state (America, the turn of the eighties and nineties of the 20th century)
And yet another problem. Multi Universum, Multiply Worlds, Universe without God (Universum ohne Gott). Another matter as God himself looks, gnädigen Gott. I would say here: Poland is there for me to write. God – I could save something if needed. A religious God is making a career (Gott Macht Karriere religion). I believe what God did not create, Luther said, because we are on the way, we are progressing, we continue the process, another question or in the right direction – but we are not creators … In the new era we again lose the sense of the world. Now God is unnecessary – is the end of philosophy? (Wir haben keine Existenz Behauptung) We are not sure of any existence. The scientist Laplace by Napoleon asked if a God was he said: ich benötige diese Hipotese nicht (I’m not interested in this hypothesis). In our age we accept subjective mental reality. God can only be felt, Loveless – God(in german Lump) does not exist (S.Beckett). In Poland, a conservative party raised Jesus to the King of Poland. And God is still ahead of us. Thank God I did not have to be an atheist (Lichtenberg). How old is Europe (wie alt ist) – that is Europe. The eternal traveler, der evige reisende, German Roger Willemsen died. However, there are still more and more readily isolated worlds (Dämmung).
There are Prohibitionists, mercenaries, they receive money in Syria, Venezuela receives or transmits the same weapon to citizens, increasing dependence on people and regions (niem.Abhangig). Anxiety in Yemen. Biblical persecution of Christian families in Bethlehem raises. Because Muslims are guided there by holy war for human soul. So the Christians leave Bethlehem. There are illegal legal regulations in the Holy Land. But Europe is re-emerging. God did not leave the continent, he returns. Create friendly zones (unspecified Zone zu werden), united order in the times in which we live. Europe is now a democratic border. But we have a common, modern technological war … What to say?
God must be so that what is so miraculously intertwined in the universe to sustain in existence (Marcel Krass). In order to “stand the fence” of the world, various concepts of God are presented: cultural, moral, religious, cosmic (the latter we have a problem). But does not devalue God’s individuality …

City of the sons of God
The mill was to be the flagship project of socialist construction. This was the first time in the history of Poland, a town without God, built deliberately without a church. In this place, conceived as a working counterweight to the intelligentsia of Cracow, to be called a “new man” – homo sovieticus. The effects did not have to wait long. Already after several years the degree of demoralization of the Nowa Huta near Cracow community was appalling.
Karol Wojtyla’s advantage was that during the war he worked physically as a quarry worker and a chemical factory. After the war, during his travels to France, he encountered the workers’ ministry, whose experience he decided to use in Poland. He knew that the priest must be close to his faithful. That is why he came to Nowa Huta for Christmas and openly celebrated the Easter Resurrection or Christmas Pasteries, even when there was a frosty frost. He also started fighting for the construction of the church in Nowa Huta, which the authorities approved after the October thaw in 1956, but later withdrew from it. The parish life was centered around the great cross on the construction site. When the authorities decided to liquidate it in April 1960, there were mass riots. The inhabitants of Nowa Huta stood spontaneously in defense of the cross. During street fights the militia used weapons, many were injured or arrested.
In the book “Get Up, Let’s Go!” John Paul II describes that he was in charge of the “war of nerves” with the authorities. He turned out to be a good negotiator and finally in 1967 he received permission from the authorities to build the church. This is how “the Ark of the Lord” was consecrated by him in 1977.
Nowa Huta appeared to Biskup Wojtyla from glass and metal, a fair case in Poland, his homeland. But who does not believe in the devil, he used to say, does not believe in the Gospel … At that time, he continued his theological and philosophical lectures also at the Catholic University of Lublin …
“Femininity finds itself in the mirror of masculinity, while masculinity is confirmed by femininity.”
At that time the Bishop of Cracow opposed the authorities of socialist Poland.
The fight of the Bishop with the Communist system was not of course direct. Karol Wojtyla was not entitled to typical political actions. This battalion was set on the doctrines and human consciences. But Wojtyla’s election to the Pope was a great blow to the Soviet bloc who for decades tried unsuccessfully to eradicate faith in Poland. For his cause, the nation has recovered identity and dignity. So he defended the possibility of celebrating Holy Mass among the workers of the Steelworks. And even made enemies with the brothers.
“The Eucharist, he said later, it is above all this awareness: I am loved, I am loved. I am what I am. “(Word to the youth, Kraków, 1987)

Memorable conclave
Someone said, “Our faith is alive because the hand is in doubt. If there was only certainty, and there would be no doubt, then there would be no mystery, and therefore there would be no need for faith.”
October 16, 1978 in the convocation after the death of John Paul I in the eighth cardinals vote Karol Wojtyla was elected pope and took the name of John Paul II. According to estimates, his candidacy was supported by 103 cardinals in 111 voters. The result was announced at 18:44. The formal inauguration of the papacy took place during the Mass on St. Mark’s Square Peter on October 22, 1978. John Paul II was the first pope from Poland, as well as the first 455 years (since the pontificate of Hadrian VI) Bishop of Rome not Italian. He was 58 years old.
“You are Christ, the Son of the living God..”
“Do not be afraid. Open, open the door to Christ!” The Successor of Peter on the Roman Capital speaks today a warm, humble, trusting prayer: “O Christ, may I be your servant, and be your servant, your servant, who has not passed away. Moreover, the servant of your servants.”
Brothers and sisters! Do not be afraid to accept Christ and agree to his power!
Do not be afraid! Christ knows what is in man. He’s the one … I want to fulfill Peter’s ministry, my the best ministry as I can. Love allows Christ to echo in his heart …
I am with my mother. My mom is busy with everyday tasks and I’m staring at the TV and am amazed at the words that encourage revolution in the heart of man. At the same time I am browsing the latest color folder, which appeared on the hundredth anniversary of the Glass Factory in Ząbkowice.(to be continued)
