I stood in Lourdes

Stanislaw Barszczak, In the footsteps of Our Lady of Lourdes, part 2

Stained glass above the main entrance to the Basilica is the work of Claudius Lavergne. On the left side of the portal is the chapel of St. Bernadette and her side there are chapels of Pascal Baylon and of Notre Dame de Guadaloupe. In 1941, the white marble engraved side doors of the basilica thanks to Marshal of France, head of the Vichy government, Philippe Pétain, who visited Lourdes in 1941 and helped the church to regain ownership of the domain of:  ‘In Memoriam 1940 to 1941, the day after our misfortunes , France is trying to rediscover its soul under the rule of Marshal Pétain. ” In 2007, the design of the facade added new mosaic depicting the mysteries of light, added in 2002 to the traditional 15 mysteries of the Rosary by Pope John Paul II. Above the basilic’s façade rises a dom , topped with a gilded crown and a cross – the gifts of the Irish people from 1924. A cross was gilded  again in 2000-2002. Crown on the dome of the basilica, it is very meaningful symbol in the house of Our Lady of Lourdes….  Church of St. Bernadette – fifth temple near the place where Bernadette had had the last apparition, on the other side of the river Gave. The modern church of movable walls can be divided into two parts. The building also has eight meeting rooms and the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament of Reconciliation …       Chapel – chapel, which is celebrated the sacrament of penance and reconciliation in different languages. The chapel is open throughout the day … The Parish Church – church of St. Peter in Lourdes, where on January 9, 1844, the eldest daughter of Francis and Louise Soubirous Bernadette received the name Maria. Today the church is called the Sacred Heart of Jesus …   Boly Mill – place of birth and the first 10 years of Bernardette’s  life …     Bartrès – a town and commune close to Lourdes, where Bernardette lived for a short time. Due to the severe financial situation of parents, 13-year-old girl was then given to her adopted mother. She helped on the farm and grazing sheep …   Presbytery – Parish house,  in which Father Peyramale lived, a staunch defender of Bernadette. Repeatedly summoning and examinated by the local authorities and the police girl, Fr. Peyramale placed in a hospice as a resident …    The procession, which every day circa at 16.30 a’clock departs from the Grotto, follows along Gave and to the bridge over the river, toward the city and turn around a wide avenue parallel to the coast road to reach the square in front of the Basilica of the Rosary. The most numerous in the procession is a crowd dressed in white nurses and volunteers in blue surrounding the love of the sick …   Candles – the tradition of coming to the cave with candles was born during the fourth apparition, 19 February 1858, when Bernadette brought with her a candle. Here I want to mention that I brought to the Poland one such processional candles, which I keep as a relic …  The procession with candles – takes place each evening from April to October with the Rosary prayer on pilgrims lips. The procession sets off from the grotto, a statue of the Immaculate carried by pilgrims, and ends in front of the Basilica of the Rosary. The faithful sing the song “Ave Maria” … near the square in front of basilicas Information Centre is located for the pilgrims and the sick. There I met a Polish priests working for the Mother of God here, Father Casimir and Adalbert. Needless to say that the sick in Lourdes are surrounded by exceptional care. They come here by bus and train in the company of volunteers. At this point I want to tell you about the modest shepherd of Lourdes. Bernadette was born on 7 January 1844 as the first daughter of Francis and Louise Soubirous. For the first 10 years living with her parents in the Boly Mill in Lourdes. After the accident his father’s family moved to the premises of the old prison, so called Cachot. In the age of 13, Bernadette was given to his premium to Bartrès, where she stayed for several months. After returning to Lourdes she began to prepare herself for the holy Communion. She was educated at a school run by the Sisters of Charity. On February 11, 1858 she had a first apparitions of Our Lady in the Grotto of Massabielle. After the apparitions Bernadette took Holy Communion. In 1864 she joined the congregation of the Sisters of Charity and Christian Education. She started to serve in the monastery at the hospice. In 1866 she left to the convent in Nevers, near Paris, where he served as an altar nurse. After a long illness, aged 35, she died. Her last words were: “Mother of God, pray for me, poor sinner.” In 1925, Pope Pius XI proclaimed her blessed, and in 1933 there was a canonization. The body of St. Bernadette rests in a reliquary in a convent in Nevers, is not broken down.     We pray constantly, not to squander of the gift of life …  Therefore I want to recall in detail the story of the apparitions in Lourdes. In 1858, when it appeared in Lourdes,  Bernadette was 14 years old. She was the eldest daughter of the family Soubirous. She lacked everything: money, health, education. She could not read or write, she often sicking and not attending school, she has still not acceded to the First Holy Communion. Parents can only give her faith, simple and lively. It was, this “daughter of the poorest” Mary has chosen for the transmission of her messages to people. It all began on February 11, 1858 with common prayer. Along with her sister and friend, Bernadette went out to gather firewood by the river, near the grotto below the rock Massabielle. She had to go across the river to catch up with mates. So she described what then happened: “When I took off my shoes first I heard the noise, as if a gust of wind, then turned my head toward the meadow. I saw that the tree does not move, so I returned to collect shoes. Again I heard the same noise. When I raised my head toward the grotto, I saw a lady dressed in white. She had a white dress, white veil, a blue sash at the waist and a rose on each shoe – yellow, the same color as her rosary chain. A little frightened. I thought it was an illusion. I rubbed my eyes. I looked again and saw the whole time the same lady. I slipped my hand into my pocket and found in it my rosary. I made the sign of the cross. Fear of what I felt was gone. I knelt down. I prayed the rosary in the presence of this beautiful lady. Lady shifted Rosary beads, but did not move her lips. When I finished the rosary – suddenly lady disappeared. “On February 14, 1858 was an attempt to holy water. This Sunday, Bernadette returned to the grotto with her friends. She wanted to see if the vision was not an illusion. Knelt at the grotto and started the rosary. After praying  one of dozens I saw the same lady. I sprinkled her with holy water, trying to oust her, unless it comes from God. “The more I sprinkled her with holy water, the more she was smiling …” – Bernadette wrote. On February 18, 1858 lady says the first time. Mary spoke only on the third time, on February 18. Bernadette came with adults. Their advice she supplied the paper and ink … “When I arrive there, I began to pray the Rosary – Bernadette writes – I saw the beautiful Lady of the Rosary in the top first ten. I told her that if it was so good and wanted to tell me something, please, that she  enrolled that. Then she smiled and told me that what he has to tell me you do not need to save.” Then the Blessed Mother asked her if she would be willing to come to this place for 15 days. The girl agreed. She heard the answer, that Mary does not promise her happiness in this world, but in the future. Revelations are ongoing …  “I returned there for the next fifteen days. I saw a vision on all days except one Monday and one Friday (between 22 and 26 February). Also received three secrets, which I was not allowed to anyone again. “- Later she wrote about these extraordinary meetings. On February 24, 1858 after four appearances silent, filled with contemplation and prayer of Bernadette, Mary gave her the order, which she repeated for several days: “Pray to God for the conversion of sinners.” Then she asked whether “it would be difficult to kneel and kiss the ground in an act of penance for sinners.” For the first time Lady uttered the word “repentance”. On February 25, 1858 Mary repeated: “Penance! Penance! Penance! “. Then Lady instructed Bernadette to eat a plant that grew there, go to the source, drink and bath in it. “Without seeing the source – says Bernadette – I turned to a river. Lady told me however that it was not there, and gave me a sign with her finger, so I went into the rock. I did so. I found just a little bit of water there, like mud, and I could barely take it. I started digging the ground. After a while I could draw water, but three times I threw it. It was only the fourth time I was able to drink so much water was dirty.”  Thus it was discovered the source of which has never dried up and became a tool of the many healings. On March 2,1858 year Bernadette received a dual mission: to tell the priests to come in procession, and built a chapel. She did not know who she was, showing her Lady. The pastor told to ask about it. When she placed the question, Lady, instead of answering, she smiled in silence. The Feast of the Annunciation, Bernadette forced response: “I asked three times who she is. She smiled all the time. Finally I tried a fourth time. Then she told me, clasping her hands at chest height, she was the Immaculate Conception.”  There have been recent meetings with the beautiful Lady. Two more times Bernadette saw Lady in the grotto of Massabielle silent, as smiling and praying the Most Holy Mother. On April 7,1858 a revelation lasted nearly an hour, several hundred people were present. Touching a candle flame of fingers for several minutes Bernadette, leaving no trace on them, as they witness all present people. Bernadette on July 16, 1858 the last time, she saw Mary more beautiful and radiant than before. Last time here on earth … Apparitions have been approved on 18 January 1862 by the Bishop of the Diocese of Tarbes, J.E. Laurence, as authentic and not questionable. You have to make a personal comment to all the events that take place in Lourdes…  So, we quote them again. Girl grazing pigs on the river Gave near Massabielle grotto – and that’s where she appeared radiant form of person. The people  were witnessed of the apparitions and strange behavior of girl, who gathered in a cave to rest. Bernadette knelt before their eyes, kissed the ground and the knees going down river. “Go to the source, have a drink  and wash” – those very words Bernardette heard from Mary. This command will fill the pilgrims to Lourdes always. In fact inside the grotto is a source of water, which appeared during the apparitions. Since the beginning of this source had been registered 6784 cases of inexplicable recovery of health after washing in this water. 67 of them, the Church officially recognized as miraculous. For the convenience of patients there are the rooms in Lourdes  were built with stone baths, where you can immerse yourself completely, and the taps were placed around the cave for filling the dishwasher. The place next to whom Our Lady appeared, a huge basilica stands today. It consists of three churches, one of which – an underground, is dedicated to Pope Pius X. For Lourdes church stands on a rock, it looks like higher,  and more powerful than it actually is. He is one nave, has 10 chapels, and the slender belfry crowned him. The nave and chapels were illuminated with beautiful stained glass windows, depicting the mystery of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary and the story of Bernadette and the apparitions.    St. Pius X Basilica- underground basilica in the shape of an inverted boat, he can accommodate 25 thousand of the people. Basilica iIlluminate unique glass paintings. “I am the Immaculate Conception” – thus Lady have presented to Bernardette during her apparitions. In the place where stood the saint lady in 1874 erected a statue of the Madonna. The figure has been faithfully reconstructed on the basis of the description of Bernadette. The truth of the apparitions of Lourdes Church has already formally confirmed 5 years after their occurrence. Daily at 20.45 there is a procession with candles to Mary, in which echoes the song “Ave Maria”, sung in different languages. Then the crowd prays the rosary together. Disabled and sick people have a daily procession of 16.30, of 20.45 also … In Lourdes you can learn about a life of a holly Bernadette, from her birth and baptism unto death: it serves to that the path “Traces of Bernadette.”   The Grevin museum (now the Musee de CIRE), there is an exhibition of wax figures there. Characters intricately made of wax create situational scenes taken from the life of St. Bernadette, first of all of Jesus Christ. Big impressive three-dimensional image display “Last Supper” by Leonardo da Vinci. The newest museum halls are shown figure of Pope John Paul II, in my opinion, very realistically presented. Comes to town every year over 6 million pilgrims. In 2008, during  Pope Benedict XVI pilgrimage to Lourdes came about 8 million people. So we have to follow the mother of God. So, only a nearness of God help us at any time. When we walk with God he teaches us and helps in everything, so that in front of the hardships and adversity of fate, we will remember his help, and we certainly will be healed.(the end)
