I stood in Lourdes 72

Stanislaw Barszczak, In the footsteps of Our Lady of Lourdes, part 1

The culmination the world’s roads, of my travels was a pilgrimage to Lourdes, in the period 20-30 June 2011. This time I stayed in the Polish Mission, “Bellevue”, Mission distant 2.5 km from the center of town, in hilly terrain. But it all started six years earlier, when my mother left for an eternal reward. I realized that it she was a man who not walking beaten paths, but will choose those unusual and also more challenging trails that lead directly to God! At the beginning of this one ‘separation’, I experienced an extraordinary kindness and benevolence of a God Mother’s, so it was only a matter of time when I would go to Lourdes. Of course I was aware that this is a very big deal for  “evil never peacefully slept.” There was no shortage, so the difficulties that I had to overcome … In particular, the problem was wounded me if a mother’s memory will provide my all care during this unique journey. I cannot imagine a better support on pilgrimage to Lourdes than provided me one hers! But I knew that Mom is incredibly open and that by this openness she was the closest to me always. It accompanied me the memory of hers 24 hours a day. On the first day of my pilgrimage, at once I was in the grotto of Massabielle. How happy I was after this extreme experience! You might wonder why you should bear the hardships of pilgrimage? I think that Jesus sometimes each of us proposes to “get out of the boat and go to Him on the water in the lake” (Mt14: 29). Of course, not even pushing for this, but he gives us a chance to exit towards him, to strengthen our Faith, Hope and Love … I am glad that I could trust Him finally. Therefore it appears before my eyes a certain analogy  here to everything that I experienced during a pilgrimage to Lourdes. Because really no words, photographs, videos are not able to pass these extraordinary events, feelings, emotions that gave me a sense of extraordinary beauty and joy. Similarly, the friendship with me it cannot describe, or show … Its presence it simply must experience to understand that it is worthwhile to go together even the smallest stage of the pilgrimage that is life. Here I want to mention that, it seems to me, yet I passed Massabielle Way of the Cross too fast… And now yet another scene. In memory I will wear a scene from Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris during the entire life, while the flight of mine was canceled one day and preparing to return the next day to the homeland. Here is the passenger who sometimes helped his wife while eating. On the surface, feeding spoon soup is nothing great, but is it such holiness of Mother Teresa of Calcutta was based not just on the fact that it was such a great person and has done so little gestures …? In Paris, I spent the night at the Polish Seminary, so when I looked out the window I saw at once known over the globe the contours of the Eiffel Tower. Then the view of the town of Lourdes and the people gathered there from around the world acted to me and people encountered close to me very positively. For they have shown us the invaluable assistance and many sings of kindness, caring and heart, which is the most precious gift … What is true is the fact that with the active personal involvement I have not found the time to distribute souvenirs, as well as I did not receive them personally, and yet coming up there to me the persons asking for support. Very valuable and beautiful was a sing also offered to me by woman to help me washing with water of Massabielle source. The pouring, dipping in the pool, wash with this water  from the miraculous source is free. I think the best commandos are not able to match to the Sisters,  and nurses in these acrobatics of any transfers of the sick and the elevation them from the coach, while they are traveling to the Virgin Mary. It is not only the passage and accommodation, but also exploring of the unusual places. Now I know that we simply must be there to understand that only place, because all the stories, photographs, I would compare to dried flowers in front of a thriving and fragrant meadows … Here I am always impressed by a patient dialogue of a ill and a woman: – only from you depends on whether I live or die in the prime of life. -Why this rush? The young man coughed for a break … The biggest impression on me was the goal of our pilgrimage – captivating beauty of Lourdes. This is a big town, surrounded by picturesque mountains and nested among the winding river. The town has more than 50 hotels but only 15,000 permanent residents. As I said on the first day, early in the afternoon I went to the Grotto of the Apparitions. There came over me  an amazing feeling that in this place God had sent the best and most beautiful piece of heaven on earth … Standing at the Massabielle Grotto I felt that the prayer itself comes from my heart to heaven and brings all the intentions which were assigned to me before leaving of my country. I think in Lourdes is essential to trust, so that we are there to be guided by God in everything. Probably it was not a coincidence that, quite unconsciously (though rather of necessity matter …) I went to the building, which later it seemed to be a hotel for people with disabilities (Accueil Notre Dame). Thanks to the extraordinary kindness of a person, I had the opportunity to meet there a religious Sister. She devoted a lot of time, I suppose, I could see this wonderful building customized. A disabled person has there all the luxuries, and can live in rooms of one-person, up to 6 people. In total, in the complex of these objects may hold 900 inmates at one time. I give this as evidence boarder.  I particularly liked the huge terrace, I saw from there what is most important: Massabielle Grotto, Basilica, and in the distance the high elevation of the cross crowning Way of the Cross. Viewed from afar, it was hard to believe that just a few hours and I will stay at the foot of the Cross. In the course of the road to Golgotta I especially wondered an attitude of people who were never not indifferent on a time of a passing beside them of a person of mine. It is this attitude that makes that on this land remain Traces of Love, which show the Way to Heaven to the others… Without a doubt, Mother of God also for me, she has left many such traces of her sensitivity and generosity at last on this only ‘valley of mercy’, even when I hit with the elevator to the observation deck nearby castle, located on the high mountain. There were seen beautiful views of the entire area adjacent Lourdes and the Pyrenees. I want to introduce the places worth seeing in the Lourdes now:  Grotto Massabielle – the place where Bernadette had had the apparitions in 1858 year. Placed on top of Grotto the statue of Our Lady, with the inscription: “I am the Immaculate Conception”, was dedicated in 1864. Inside the cave there is water source, which appeared during the apparitions … The Crypt – The first chapel, carved in the rock rising above the Grotto. The chapel was built in response to the call of Our Lady, after recognition of apparitions by the Church authorities. Bernardette’s Father participated in the construction of a chapel, which one has a gothic arch. The altar is set up a sculpture of Madonna with Child. In the crypt takes place all day adoration of the Blessed Sacrament … St. Pius X Basilica- underground basilica in the shape of an inverted boat, which seats are for 25 thousand people, consecrated the centenary of the apparitions in 1958. There are the lights there as a series of extraordinary images of glass (Gemmail). These paintings and souvenirs glass in the local , beautifully illuminated shops in a particular way they recall the memory of a Mom, which in her time, she worked in the glass factory in Ząbkowice … The Basilica of the Immaculate Conception – known as the upper basilica, built directly above the Grotto, and Vault. It is a neo-Gothic nave church with ten chapels, surmounted by soaring bell tower. The nave and chapels were illuminated stained-glass windows depicting the beautiful mystery of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the story of Bernadette and the apparitions. Sacred Immaculate Conception means the Mother of the Son of God from the first moment of its existence, she had no original sin. The dogma of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary was proclaimed in 1854 by our Catholic Church, therefore, just three years after Bernadette had a vision of Our Lady, who said of herself, that was ‘the Immaculate Conception’ …   Figure – crowned statue of Our Lady placed at the end of the esplanade , the one square of green, while the promenade, opposite the basilica, crowned July 3, 1876 …   The Basilica of the Rosary r is the third church built in the sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes (in the crypt and upper church). It was designed in the Byzantine style by the architect Leopold Hardy and built between 1883-1899. Consecrated in 1901. Built on a Greek cross basilica has a size of 52 × 48, and can accommodate 2,500 of the faithful, of which 1500 have seats. The basilica was entered on the list of French historical monument as a memorial of the second class. Over the years, leaking water caused considerable damage to the building architecture and its decorations. In 2006-2007, the entire temple was a major renovation. Restored a damaged mosaic. Restoration was made possible thanks to cooperation with the city of the sanctuary, pilgrims generous donations and assistance from the state (at the regional level, state and the European Union). Basilica of the Rosary has 15 chapels with beautiful mosaics depicting the 15 mysteries of the Rosary. The facade of the basilica is decorated with mosaics depicting the mysteries of light, made to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the apparitions … The half-round, marble facade of the basilica’s main portal. Adorned with bas-relief of Mary with baby Jesus in his hand a rosary of St. Dominic. Was placed over her round, made in the Vatican two mosaics, which left shows Pope Leo XIII and the right-François-Xavier Schoepfer, bishop of the diocese of Tarbes (1899-1912) and the Diocese of Tarbes and Lourdes (1912-1927)  to be continued…
